BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE

ABOUT THE BOOK

"This book is an honest and sincere narrative about the journey from diagnosis to complete recovery from Autism Spectrum Disorder as seen from a father's perspective. More often than not we hear from the mothers of children diagnosed with autism. This book is different because it is the first book of its kind, reflecting on the male perspective, the challenges, and the struggles of the fathers of special children.

Kerry L. Brooks takes you back to the beginning of his own experience as a special dad, from hearing the diagnosis, questioning his role and his abilities as an individual and as a father to protect and help his son, through the deep emotional wounds of feeling helpless and unable to come up with solutions, to finding faith in the midst of a crisis and creating his own daddy's protocol for healing not only his son but himself as well.

Kerry shares heartwarming stories about putting to use the best of his skills and "whatever is lying around" to engage with his child, going for

"Fake it up, until you make it" attitude. He speaks about the slow but glorious return of his son's speech and the steady increase of communication, thanks to the simple but fun activities they did together as a family with his son. You can "follow" him as he hand-over-hand dribbles around the basketball court with his son teaching hand-eye coordination, gross motor skills, and teamwork. You can almost hear him cheering, "It is not important where or how you start, but where and how you finish!"

The book covers his personal experience over nineteen years of fatherly love among trials and tribulations and the unwavering faith that forges a sacrifice for something greater than oneself. Kerry commemorates teaching his son every step of the way from simple things, like brushing his teeth, through the dreadful potty training, over the hills of socialization and healthy self-esteem; finding purpose and developing strength of character, integrity, and personal responsibility for one's future. A father is indeed called to lead the way thought the life passages by personal example. A hero is not measured by his strength but by the strength of his heart, indeed.

Kerry's fatherly labor of love did deliver. His son, Max ended playing varsity basketball, recognized as a MIP during his last year of high school. Having a very clear sense of life purpose, he graduated with honors, received the highest scholarship, and now is enthusiastically working on his next life chapter as a freshman in his dream university, free from any ASD residue and leftovers.

In his book, Mr. Brooks, a law enforcement professional of 30 years also discusses the predicament faced by families with loved ones on the spectrum due to the lack of education about Autism and its behavioral proclivities among first responders. He shares some very much needed advice, methods, and tips for crisis management and de-escalation that every parent or caregiver should learn, know, and teach forward. Lack of knowledge, misreading a behavior and misunderstanding should never be a reason for the loss of innocent life. In a typical for a father protective manner, he offers a "must know and must do" step-by-step manual of what to do to ensure the safety of individuals with special needs. Every chapter ends with a brief summary, aimed at fathers, in a form of a manual.

This book is a wonderful simple gift to every family and every father who needs encouragement, hope, and faith in better days to come restored.

This is a story of an unfolding love and a testimony that where there is love, there are miracles!

Enjoy!

AS A GUEST SPEAKER AT YOUR EVENT

Dear parents and caregivers,

Here, at Autism 2 Awesome, we hope to assist you to reshape the typical story about the lives of people and families with Autism. Our Special Intervention Training Techniques (SITT) and coping skills methods were tried and tested for a good twenty years during our own journey from Autism to awesome with our son. We are happy to share with you that our son

graduated with honors and is now attending the (only) college of his choice, excited about his bright and independent future.

Along the way we have helped many, have learned from many, and uplifted as many more people as we can. We witnessed miracles, recovery, and healing. There is no bigger joy to see that light of hope coming through the clouds and you just know there will be a rainbow at the end of the storm. You are the very reason why I decided to write a book without any prior experience or free time to spare for such a demanding project, but every family that is already walking in our shoes or just beginning their own journey needs to know that your greatest crisis can become your greatest miracle.

Keep the faith,

Kerry L. Brooks

Attitude Is Everything

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past than education, career, money, circumstances, failures; it is more important than achievements and success,  what other people think, say, or do.  Your Attitude is more important than appearance, your talents, or skills. It makes or breaks a company...a church...a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day what attitude we chose to embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable. We could only change our attitude about all of the above.

All we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. The same applies to you. Charles Swindol said, "Take charge of your attitude and see your life changing."

When my son was diagnosed with autism the doctor told us to give up on him and go have other children.  He also told us to prepare our child to live in a group home setting for the rest of his life.

So I played my one string of attitude, took responsibility, and changed our lives forever.  Today, my son studies abroad,  he is an honor student, speaks four languages, he is a world traveler with a wanderlust for cultures and experiences and a great son.  He is planning to attend college and start his own business. If he doesn't remember anything else from his former experience, he will remember this, "Attitude is everything."

Be First 2 Respond  Training

Be First 2 Respond is Crisis Intervention Training for law enforcement, fire rescue, public safety, emergency medical response teams, hospital ERs, 911 dispatchers, social services, and criminal justice agency personnel.

The rising populations of children with special needs are coming of age. Observation or perception of “odd” behaviors prompt concern, anxiety, or panic in the general public, and thus life-threatening incidents may arise for the lack of public understanding and inability to discriminate between criminal activity and odd behavior. The engagement of first responders in such situations can escalate and increase the likelihood of possible emotional or physical trauma to an individual with special needs and the community at large.

Be First 2 Respond training teaches the skills necessary for first responders to recognize and engage professionally when incidents occur without further escalating the situation or endangering lives.

What you should demand from your local congressman, senator, governor, and law enforcement professionals is that every first responder incorporates the following skills regarding individuals diagnosed with Autism spectrum Disorder.

  • CRISIS INTERVENTION

  • DE-ESCALATION SKILLS

  • NON-COMPLIANCE INTERVENTION

  • SEARCH & RESCUE

  • COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

  • INCREASED AWARENESS

  • REDUCING STRESS

  • IMPROVED SAFETY

  • AVOIDING LITIGATION

  • COMMUNITY TRUST

  • OFFICER CONFIDENCE

Research indicates that persons with developmental disabilities are approximately seven times more likely to come in contact with law enforcement professionals than others. Police and first response professionals will meet and engage with special needs individuals of all ages in field situations.

We can not lose any more lives for the lack of awareness, training, or misinterpretation of behavior. Talk to your school, your police chief, your local sheriff, and help me continue to increase  Autism Safety Awareness for the sake of our children and ourselves, as parents. We all need to do our share.
