Dear Supporters,
Happy New Year!  We hope that the new year has started off well for all of you and brings nothing but joy.  In this issue, we've included some information on upcoming events as well as several articles geared towards ALL parents, not just those raising children with autism.

A Little Inspiration
At Autism 2 Awesome, we believe that a little inspiration can make a world of difference and have included a little something that has inspired us in the hopes that it can do the same for you.
To go along with several articles that we present to you this month regarding the effect of a parent's behavior on his or her child, our inspiration this month is a simple quotation:

Children are educated by what the grown-up is and not by his talk.

Mom's Behavior Key To Dad's Involvement In Child Care
In addition to the benefits already discussed about presenting a united front when tackling autism, studies are showing that the encouragement given by mothers (whether the child is autistic or nor) tends to cause fathers to be more involved in their child's care.  These results are particularly encouraging as we try to get the word out that fathers can make a staggering difference in their autistic child's improvement when they are actively involved in their child's treatment.

Study: Early Autism Intervention In Toddlers Is Effective
Research is showing that if autism is diagnosed early in a child's development--by eighteen months of age--intervention therapy can lead to increases in IQ levels as well as improved language and behavioral skills. Studies have also shown that therapy centered around relaxation and play for fifteen hours a week often produced more desirable results when compared to more traditional adult-directed therapy for forty hours a week.

Divorce Increases Risk Of Ritalin Use
Dr. Lisa Strohschein found that children of divorced parents are twice as likely to use Ritalin.  A possible explanation is that the divorce causes large amounts of stress, leading to mental health disorders--compounded by the fear that attention deficit drugs such as Ritalin are being prescribed inappropriately.  Another possibility is that the divorcing parents assume their child must have high levels of stress due to life-altering changes in their home life and the perception of instability causes doctors to prescribe medication accordingly.

Supportive Co-Parenting May Reduce Some Child Behavior Problems
Research suggests that parents that present a warm, supportive, partnership in front of their child may help prevent or decrease their child's attention or behavioral problems.  These findings are particularly significant when considering that temperament remains relatively stable over time--if a child has trouble controlling themselves early in life, likely that problem will persist.  Cooperative co-parenting may help manage this issue.

Children Who Have An Active Father Figure Have Fewer Psychological And Behavioral Problems
Swedish researchers are finding that a positive, strong father figure can decrease the chances of behavioral and psychological problems in their children.  In addition, positive contact reduces criminal behavior and can lead to enhancements in cognitive skill.

More details about the study can be found at Science Daily.
